![]() Principal investigator Simon Hook says scientists have only just begun to scratch the surface of how the instrument can be used based on its frequent and high-resolution temperature measurements. It can identify plant stress down to an individual farmer’s field, when intervention and water management may still be possible to save crops. Since then, ECOSTRESS has provided new insights into the relationship between plant temperatures and water usage. The instrument required the addition of Wi-Fi modules to transmit its data to the station, which in turn required astronauts to conduct a spacewalk to install them. The human crew came in especially handy for the Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) instrument, which records the temperature of plants on Earth’s surface by measuring the heat they give off. The ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) is located on the Japanese Experiment Module on the International Space Station. An especially comprehensive suite of Earth observing instruments are currently aboard the station, with two more approved and several more proposing to become future ISS instruments. They illustrate how the different parts of a system interact with each other to carry out a function, and the order in which the interactions occur when a particular use case is executed. Sequence diagrams, commonly used by developers, model the interactions between objects in a single use case. Skyscraper is like the kind of movie I grew up watching: Die Hard, Towering Inferno, The Fugitive. And they don't really make these movies any more. And we're the only picture that doesn't really have a superhero at its center, when you talk about these big tentpoles. We have sequels on either side of us - we have 11 sequels in sort of a five-week corridor - and we're the only original picture there. But I think that's what's so interesting about Skyscraper, is that it isn't about a superhero. It's clearly a good year for superheroes. On Skyscraper's place among this year's big movie releases, and if it's a good year for heroes And I think the film is so tense, and people are gripping their chairs and kind of watching it through their fingers, that you want those moments of relief so people can kind of shake the tension out and laugh and then buckle up again. Now certainly, Skyscraper isn't quite as funny as Die Hard, but we found the moments - the moments of levity. But that movie is about three jokes shy of a straight-up comedy. It's on the Mount Rushmore of action pictures. You know, Die Hard is one of my all-time favorite films. On building moments of humor into a high-tension movie What does his family mean to him? What is he willing to sacrifice? What is he willing to risk? And it turns out: He's willing to risk everything. And then the sort of beats that you talk about, where Dwayne's character Will Sawyer first attempts to use the crane hook to get in, and then that goes wrong, and then he doubles back and is going to try another way but he can't and he's cut off, and he's forced to make this leap of faith - you know, this is all stuff that you learn from Spielberg, I suppose, in the escalation of tension, the escalation of problem that pushes you toward character, toward revealing character. So how do you do it, right? So first I faced myself with that puzzle, and then there's that lightbulb moment, and I remember it distinctly, and I got really excited 'cause I'd never seen anything like it, and it seemed appropriately over-the-top for this kind of picture. The first is: How do you get into a burning building when your family's trapped above the fire line, 100 stories in the air? 'Cause you can't go in through the bottom and climb your way up. On coming up with the stunt where Dwayne Johnson jumps across a gap from a crane into the burning building. Maybe I should have made Ranch House or something." Yeah, I guess maybe I made the wrong movie. "My mom's scared of heights I'm scared of heights. He's speaking from the 116th floor of a hotel in Hong Kong, avoiding the windows. "I am scared of heights," Thurber says in an interview. The director, Rawson Marshall Thurber, is writing and making his second film with Johnson. There are lots of scary moments, lots of tension, and - if you are afraid of heights - lots more tension. The world's tallest building! On fire! With thousands of people inside! However, due to the difficulty in using such commands, a number of alternatives are frequently employed to denote inequality. The not equals sign (≠) can be written using certain Unicode commands such as U+2260 2260,Alt+X in Microsoft Windows. To represent this properly, one should represent the different computations with commas in between them:Ģ + 3 = 5, 5 + 6 = 11, 11 + 5 = 15 Not Equals And Other Equals Sign Variants The intention here is to represent adding the first two numbers together followed by adding another number. People will occasionally write out operations like this: Note that the sign may occasionally be used to connect steps of mathematical operations together in a non-standard way. The field of linguistics sometimes uses the equals sign to denote clitic boundaries, with the sign coming in between the word the clitic is attached to and the clitic itself. Other usages of the equals sign include the usage of the sign in chemistry, where it signals the presence of a double bond between atoms. “Mathematics possesses not only truth, but a supreme beauty - a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.” - Bertrand Russell Meanwhile, Javascript uses the triple equals sign to indicate “equality without type coercion”. Likewise, PHP uses three equals sign to make statements about value equality, showing that the expressions have equal values and share the same data type. For instance, Python uses a double equals sign (“=”) as a comparison operator since the single equals sign is used as an assignment operator. ![]() Programming languages that don’t use the equals symbol as a statement of equality have other methods of handling this equality comparison. Languages like Perl, Python, and C continue to use the equals sign as an assignment operator, while languages like Eiffel, Asa, and APL use the equals sign to indicate equivalency. ![]() Examples of both types of use for the equals sign can be found in modern programming languages. Other computer languages may use the equals sign with the traditional “equivalency” meaning. Photo: John Sauter via Wikimedia Commons, Public Domain In computer programming languages in general, the equals sign doesn’t exactly mean two things are equivalent, instead, it functions as an assignment operator, setting the value of some statement to a following statement. FORTRAN is believed to be the first computer language to make use of the equals sign, with the sign being included in revisions to FORTRAN in 1957. However, the equals sign is often used in other fields, such as in computer programming. In math, using the equals sign asserts that two statements or variables are equivalent to one another. Beyond that, Rercorde helped introduce the world at large to concepts of data manipulation and quantification, with theories and instructions on applying mathematics to various domains such as navigation, commerce, land surveying, and astronomy. Recorde’s equals sign and other contributions to mathematical theory and operators gave computer scientists a ubiquitous and universally recognized symbol to assign values and assert a quality. It is arguable that Recorde laid the foundation for the discipline of computer science, as computer science is at its core about processing, creating, and collecting data. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos.” - Neil DeGrasse Tyson A vertical equals sign, rather than a horizontal equals sign, may have been used throughout the 1600s, with the now universally used horizontal equal sign becoming standardized over the course of the 1700s. ![]() This gave Recorde’s equals sign some extra influence, as when combined with + and – the equals sign could easily be used to assert mathematical equations that took much longer to write out. However, Recorde had introduced English speakers to the now-famous German symbols for subtraction and addition: “+” and “-”. One reason that Recorde’s symbol may have been slow to catch on was that in the 16th century Latin still heavily influenced communication, and the term “aequalis” was frequently just shortened to “Ae” or “oe” if an abbreviation was required. While Recorde’s new equals sign succinctly implied equality between two values, it wasn’t widely adopted until much later. ![]() |
